MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay, April 10, 2026 - Google and Central Orbit announced today a waste-to-energy initiative in Uruguay intended to support Google data center infrastructure in Canelones through dispatchable power generation and responsible waste management.
The initiative is based on a platform designed to convert non-recyclable municipal solid waste through advanced gasification technology into syngas for use in high-efficiency generators. Future phases may also incorporate hydrogen production for generators and fuel cells as the platform develops.
"Reliable and scalable energy supply is becoming increasingly important in the development of advanced computing infrastructure. This initiative reflects the value of evaluating dispatchable and lower-carbon energy solutions that can support long-term infrastructure needs while aligning with broader waste management objectives."
"We are pleased to expand our cooperation with Google through this initiative in Uruguay and to continue building on the platform's development in other regions."
Broader Platform Strategy
The Uruguay initiative forms part of Google and Central Orbit's broader waste-to-energy platform strategy, alongside ongoing development in Europe and planned expansion into the United States.
Any future project will remain subject to technical evaluation, commercial structuring, regulatory review, and definitive agreements. The parties stated that environmental controls, stakeholder engagement, and responsible community integration will be central to project development.
