Iceland has expanded its geothermal district heating network to serve 95% of the population, leveraging abundant geothermal resources for space heating and hot water. Geothermal heating has virtually eliminated fossil fuel heating in Iceland, providing a blueprint for other countries with geothermal resources. Recent expansions have extended service to previously unserved rural communities. Low heating costs due to abundant geothermal resources support Iceland's energy-intensive industries and high standard of living.
